TransAction! - November 21, 2008
GLSEN is proud to be sponsoring a new national day of action: TransAction! This is a day for action, a day for education, celebration, and a day for people who do not identify as transgender to become an ally and stand up for the rights of individuals who have been the victims of harassment, bullying and name-calling because of their gender identity and/or gender expression.
TransAction! encourages students to organize a workshop, panel discussion, or similar forum about gender, gender identity gender roles, and the broader transgender umbrella. You are encouraged to incorporate one or more of the following aspects in your action:
Educate:
Outreach to organizations/community leaders that can help you organize a forum or a workshop.
Faciliate a workshop on Gender Identity and the Transgender Experience.
Get familiar with key terms about gender.
Create Awareness:
In addition to highlighting various aspects of gender and transgender experiences make sure that you celebrate the contributions transgender people have made in social justice movements.
Commemorate:
Develop an activity that remembers people who have lost their lives due to due to their sexual orientation and gender expression. Here are some ideas:
Transgender Day of Remembrance (TDOR).
Candlelight Vigils / Marches
Visual representation of the number of deaths with:
Cardboard Tomb Stones of Remembered People
Paper Cutouts of Remembered People
Body Outline chalkings of Remembered People
Art / Photography Displays
