Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Organizing Weekend (January 16-19, 2009)

"We are all tied together in a single garment of destiny. An inescapable network of mutuality. I can never be what I ought to be until you are allowed to be what you ought to be." -- Martin Luther King Jr.

MLK Organizing Weekend is an action that recognizes the importance of collaborating with other groups, understanding the roots of organizing in social justice movements, and working outside of our schools. This action is a powerful weekend that brings the experiences and of students in the safer schools movement together with other social justice movements.

Are you a student organizer, a freedom fighter, an activist, or maybe just want to stop all of the hate you see in your school? Then organize an event in your school or community in the spirit of one of the world's greatest leaders! Here are some ideas for you:

Volunteer
  • At the local MLK day march/parade
  • At a local community organization dedicated to social justice
  • For another school group that may be having an event

    Host
  • A Civil Rights movie night
  • A poetry or open mic event
  • A cultural pot luck dinner, giving people time to discuss their club/organization's mission

    Create
  • A Civil Rights display board
  • A series of posters of leaders from various movements
  • A video on leaders from various movements

    Organize
  • A panel discussion of various student and adult leaders
  • A workshop on coalition building
  • A speaker who can talk about the intersections of LGBT and other civil rights movements

    DAY of SILENCE : April 25, 2008
DAY OF SILENCE, April 25, 2008: This year’s Day of Silence will be held in memory of Lawrence King, who friends say was murdered in a California school February 12 because of his sexual orientation and gender expression. The event brings attention to anti-LGBT bullying, harassment and discrimination in schools. Students observe the day in silence to echo the silence LGBT and ally students face every day.
